About Santa Justa Lift

The Santa Justa Lift (Portuguese: Elevador de Santa Justa, pronounced [elɨvɐˈðoɾ ðɨ ˈsɐ̃tɐ ˈʒuʃtɐ]), also called Carmo Lift (Portuguese: Elevador do Carmo, [elɨvɐˈðoɾ ðu ˈkaɾmu]), is an elevator, or lift, in the civil parish of Santa Maria Maior, in the historic center of Lisbon, Portugal. Situated at the end of Rua de Santa Justa, it connects the lower streets of the Baixa with the higher Largo do Carmo (Carmo Square). Since its construction the lift has become a tourist attraction for Lisbon as, among the urban lifts in the city, Santa Justa is the only remaining vertical (conventional) one. Others, including Elevador da Glória and Elevador da Bica, are actually funicular railways, and the other lift constructed around the same time, the Elevator of São Julião, has since been demolished.

How we make money

These sites are free to use. Many links to flights, hotels, products and services are affiliate links. If you click one and make a booking or purchase, the company may pay us a commission. It never adds to the price you pay.

We work with affiliate networks such as Travelpayouts. We don't charge companies to be listed, and partners can't pay to change our tips or advice. Commission can affect which companies appear on the site.

Prices and availability shown by partners change quickly, so always check the final price before you book. Fares and prices shown on our pages may be cached and out of date.

Other companies

Some content loads straight from other companies, who can see your IP address when it does: fonts from Google Fonts, photos from Wikipedia and Wikimedia, and partner search widgets. When you click an affiliate link, the partner and the affiliate network (for example Travelpayouts) record the visit so we can be paid. Their own privacy policies apply from that point.
