About Pau, Pyrénées-Atlantiques

📍 ⛅ Partly cloudy 9°C now

Pau (; French: [po]; Occitan: [paw]; Basque: Paue) is a commune overlooking the Pyrenees, the prefecture of the Pyrénées-Atlantiques department in the Nouvelle-Aquitaine region of Southwestern France. The city is located in the heart of the former sovereign principality of Béarn, of which it was the capital from 1464. Pau lies on the Gave de Pau, and is located 100 kilometres (62 mi) from the Atlantic Ocean and 50 kilometres (31 mi) from Spain. This position gives it a striking panorama across the mountain range of the Pyrenees, especially from its landmark Boulevard des Pyrénées, as well as the hillsides of Jurançon. According to Alphonse de Lamartine, "Pau has the world's most beautiful view of the earth just as Naples has the most beautiful view of the sea." The site has been occupied since at least the Gallo-Roman era.

How we make money

These sites are free to use. Many links to flights, hotels, products and services are affiliate links. If you click one and make a booking or purchase, the company may pay us a commission. It never adds to the price you pay.

We work with affiliate networks such as Travelpayouts. We don't charge companies to be listed, and partners can't pay to change our tips or advice. Commission can affect which companies appear on the site.

Prices and availability shown by partners change quickly, so always check the final price before you book. Fares and prices shown on our pages may be cached and out of date.

Our money, energy and broadband pages give general information and simple calculators only. They are not financial advice, and we don't currently compare insurance, loans or other regulated financial products.

Other companies

Some content loads straight from other companies, who can see your IP address when it does: fonts from Google Fonts, photos from Wikipedia and Wikimedia, and partner search widgets. When you click an affiliate link, the partner and the affiliate network (for example Travelpayouts) record the visit so we can be paid. Their own privacy policies apply from that point.
